The CCNA certification is your entry level for training in Cisco. This will enable you to work on the maintenance and installation of routers. The internet is made up of many routers, and large companies who have various regional departments need them to connect their computer networks.

Routers are linked to networks, therefore it’s essential to have an understanding of how networks work, or you’ll struggle with the program and be unable to do the work. Seek out a program that includes basic networking skills (for example CompTIA) before you start the CCNA.

Should this be your first introduction to routers, then qualifying up to the CCNA level is more than enough – you’re not yet ready for your CCNP. With a few years experience behind you, you will know if it’s appropriate for you to go to the level of CCNP.

With so much choice, is it any wonder that a large majority of career changers get stuck choosing the job they could be successful with. After all, if you don’t have any understanding of the IT market, how could you possibly know what any qualified IT worker fills their day with? And of course decide on what educational path provides the best chances for ultimate success. To get to the bottom of this, we need to discuss a number of core topics:

* What hobbies you have and enjoy – these can show the things will satisfy you.

* What length of time can you allocate for the training process?

* What scale of importance is the salary – is an increase your main motivator, or is job satisfaction a little higher on the scale of your priorities?

* There are many areas to train for in Information Technology – you will have to gain a basic understanding of what separates them.

* It makes sense to understand the differences across each individual training area.

In actuality, you’ll find the only real way to gain help on these areas will be via a meeting with an advisor that has years of experience in the IT industry (as well as it’s commercial requirements.)

Don’t listen to any salesperson that just tells you what course you should do without an in-depth conversation to gain understanding of your current abilities and also your experience level. They should be able to select from a wide-enough stable of training programs from which they could give you a program that suits you.. In some circumstances, the training inception point for a person experienced in some areas is substantially different to someone just starting out. If this is your initial stab at studying to take an IT exam then it may be wise to start out with some basic PC skills training first.

It’s so important to understand this key point: You have to get round-the-clock 24×7 support from professional instructors. You will have so many problems later if you don’t. Beware of institutions who use messaging services ‘out-of-hours’ – where an advisor will call back during standard office hours. This is useless when you’re stuck and could do with an answer during your scheduled study period.

World-class organisations provide an online access 24×7 service involving many support centres throughout multiple time-zones. You will have an easy to use interface which switches seamlessly to the best choice of centres no matter what time of day it is: Support when you need it. Look for a company that cares. Only true live 24×7 support provides the necessary backup.

Huge changes are about to hit technology as we approach the second decade of the 21st century – and this means greater innovations all the time. Technology, computers and interaction through the web will dramatically shape the way we live our lives in the future; to a vast degree.

If earning a good living is way up on your goal sheet, then you’ll be happy to know that the income on average of a typical IT worker is noticeably more than with most other jobs or industries. Excitingly, there is no end in sight for IT sector increases in the UK. The market continues to develop quickly, and with the skills shortage of over 26 percent that we’re experiencing, it’s most unlikely that there’ll be any kind of easing off for quite some time to come.

Only consider learning programs that’ll lead to industry accepted exams. There’s a plethora of trainers offering their own ‘in-house’ certificates that are essentially useless in the real world. From the viewpoint of an employer, only the big-boys such as Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe (to give some examples) will get you into the interview seat. Nothing else will cut the mustard.

What can a student looking for training tracks certified by Microsoft expect to come across? Undoubtedly, training organisations ought to have a selection of course choices that meet the requirements of training tracks certified by Microsoft. You’ll want to consider all the options with a person who understands the commercial demands for IT staff, and can influence your choice of the most fruitful career to suit your abilities and character. Once you’ve decided on the area you want to get into, your next search is for a suitable training program customised to your needs. Your course material should be second to none.

The perhaps intimidating chore of finding your first IT job is often eased by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance service. Because of the massive skills shortage in this country at the moment, there isn’t a great need to get too caught up in this feature though. It’s actually not as hard as some people make out to land employment once you’re trained and certified.

One important thing though, avoid waiting until you have finished your training before updating your CV. As soon as your training commences, mark down what you’re doing and get it out there! Quite often, you’ll land your initial role while still studying (even in the early stages). If your course details aren’t on your CV (and it’s not being looked at by employers) then you don’t stand a chance! The top companies to help get you placed are generally independent and specialised local recruitment services. As they’re keen to place you to receive their commission, they’ll work that much harder to get a result.

A regular aggravation for many training providers is how hard men and women are prepared to study to get top marks in their exams, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the role they’ve trained for. Don’t falter at the last fence.

Ensure all your exams are current and commercially required – you’re wasting your time with programs which end up with a useless in-house certificate or plaque. Unless your qualification is issued by a company like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe, then chances are it won’t be commercially viable – because it won’t give an employer any directly-useable skills.

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as many people do, on the certification itself. Training is not an end in itself; this is about employment. Stay focused on what it is you want to achieve. It’s common, for instance, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying and then spend 20 miserable years in a job you hate, simply because you did it without some quality research when it was needed – at the start.

Stay focused on what it is you’re trying to achieve, and build your study action-plan from that – don’t do it the other way round. Stay on target and begin studying for a job you’ll still be enjoying many years from now. Your likely to need help from someone that knows the commercial realities of the sector you’re considering, and who can offer ‘A day in the life of’ synopsis for that career-path. These things are incredibly important as you’ll need to fully understand if this change is right for you.

An effective training program will undoubtedly also offer accredited simulation materials and exam preparation packages. Ensure that the practice exams are not just posing the correct questions on the correct subjects, but also asking them in the exact format that the real exams will pose them. It throws students if the phraseology and format is completely different. For many reasons, it’s essential to be confident that you are completely prepared for your actual certification exam before taking it. Practicing simulated tests will help to boost your attitude and will avoid you getting frustrated with thwarted exam entries.

At the top of your shopping list for a training program should be comprehensive 24×7 direct-access support with dedicated instructors and mentors. It’s an all too common story to find providers that only provide office hours (or extended office hours) support. Look for training with proper support available at all hours of the day and night (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) You want access directly to professional tutors, and not a message system as this will slow you down – parked in a queue of others waiting to be called back when it’s convenient for them.

The best trainers incorporate three or four individual support centres across multiple time-zones. Online access provides the interactive interface to seamlessly link them all, at any time you choose, help is at hand, with no hassle or contact issues. If you accept anything less than online 24×7 support, you’ll end up kicking yourself. You might not want to use the service throughout the night, but what about weekends, evenings and early mornings at some point.

by Jason Kendall

There are actually 4 different sectors in the A+ syllabus, of which 2 passes are needed to be considered A+ qualified. We would advise however that only studying two of the four specialities might well not equip you for a job. Look for training that covers all the specialist areas – employers will notice the difference.

Passing the A+ exam by itself will allow you to repair and fix computers and Macs; ones that are generally not connected to a network – which means the home or small business market. If your ambition is taking care of computer networks, add the very comprehensive CompTIA Network+ to your training package. This qualification will mean you can get a higher paid position. You may also want to consider the Microsoft networking qualifications (MCP, MCSA and MCSE).

The area most overlooked by people thinking about a course is the concept of ‘training segmentation’. Basically, this means the breakdown of the materials for delivery to you, which completely controls the point you end up at. The majority of training companies will set up some sort of program spread over 1-3 years, and deliver each piece one-by-one as you pass each exam. If you think this sound logical, then consider this: What would their reaction be if you find it difficult to do each element at the required speed? Sometimes their preference of study order doesn’t come as naturally as some other structure would for you.

In a perfect world, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – so you’ll have them all to come back to in the future – whenever it suits you. Variations can then be made to the order that you complete your exams if another more intuitive route presents itself.

Only consider learning courses which will move onto industry accepted qualifications. There are far too many trainers promoting their own ‘in-house’ certificates which will prove unusable in today’s commercial market. You’ll find that only recognised certification from companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco and CompTIA will be useful to a future employer.

You’ll come across courses which guarantee examination passes – inevitably that means paying for the exams before you’ve even made a start on the course. Before you jump at guaranteed exams, be aware of the facts:

You’ll be charged for it by some means. It certainly isn’t free – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package. We all want to pass first time. Entering examinations one by one and paying as you go makes it far more likely you’ll pass first time – you revise thoroughly and are conscious of what you’ve spent.

Go for the best offer you can find at the time, and keep hold of your own money. In addition, it’s then your choice where to sit the exam – so you can find somewhere local. Buying a course that includes payments for examinations (and interest charges if you’re borrowing money) is madness. It’s not your job to boost the training company’s account with additional funds only to please their Bank Manager! Many will hope you won’t get round to taking them – but they won’t refund the cash. The majority of organisations will insist that you take mock exams first and prohibit you from re-taking an exam until you’ve completely proven that you’re likely to pass – which actually leaves you with no guarantee at all.

Due to typical VUE and Prometric tests in the United Kingdom costing around 112 pounds, by far the best option is to pay for them as you take them. There’s no sense in throwing away maybe a thousand pounds extra at the start of your studies. Study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will really guarantee success.

We can guess that you’re a practical sort of person – a ‘hands-on’ personality type. Usually, the painful task of reading endless manuals is something you’ll make yourself do if you have to, but it’s not ideal. So look for on-screen interactive learning packages if books just don’t do it for you. Memory is vastly improved when we use multiple senses – educational experts have expounded on this for decades now.

Programs are now found in disc format, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Utilising the latest video technology, you can watch instructors demonstrating how something is done, with some practice time to follow – via the interactive virtual lab’s. Always insist on a demonstration of the study materials from any training college. You should ask for expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and virtual practice lab’s for your new skills.

Some companies only have access to training that is purely available online; and although this is okay the majority of the time, imagine the problems if your access to the internet is broken or you only get very a very slow connection sometimes. A safer solution is the provision of DVD or CD discs which removes the issue entirely.

Looking at the myriad of choice out there, is it any wonder that most potential career changers don’t really understand the best career path they will enjoy. As without any commercial skills in IT, how should we possibly understand what a particular job actually consists of? Ultimately, an informed answer will only come via a thorough analysis of many varying factors:

* Which type of individual you think yourself to be – what tasks do you get enjoyment from, and conversely – what don’t you like doing.

* Do you hope to achieve a specific goal – for example, working for yourself as quickly as possible?

* The income needs you may have?

* Learning what the main job types and sectors are – including what sets them apart.

* It’s wise to spend some time thinking about any sacrifices you’ll need to make, as well as what commitment and time that you will set aside for your training.

In these situations, your only option to research these issues is through a chat with an advisor or professional that has a background in Information Technology (and specifically it’s commercial requirements.)

Only one in ten people in the United Kingdom are pleased and contented with their working life. The vast majority of course won’t do a thing. The reality of your getting here at a minimum indicates that change is beckoning.

Prior to considering specific training programs, find an expert who will give you advice on the right type of training for you. Someone who can get to know your personality, and discover what job role you’ll be most comfortable with:

* Would you like lots of contact with people? If so, do you want a team or do you want to meet lots of new people? Or are you better working in isolation?

* What’s important that you get from the area of industry you choose? (Things do change – look at the building trade, or banks for example.)

* Once your training has been completed, would you like your skills to serve you till you retire?

* Will this new qualification allow you to find new work easily, and stay employable until you wish to retire?

A predominant industry in this country to tick all of the above boxes is the IT sector. There is a requirement for greater numbers of knowledgeable workers in IT, – take a look at any jobsite and there’ll be a long list. Don’t misunderstand and think it’s all techie people gazing towards theirscreens all day – there are loads more jobs than that. The majority of employees in IT are ordinary people, and they have very interesting and well paid jobs.

Every program under consideration should always lead to a commercially valid accreditation as an end-goal – and not some unimportant ‘in-house’ diploma – fit only for filing away and forgetting. Unless your qualification is issued by a big-hitter like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco, then it’s likely it will be commercially useless – because it won’t give an employer any directly-useable skills.

We can guess that you’ve always enjoyed practical work – the ‘hands-on’ person. If you’re like us, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides can be just about bared when essential, but you’d hate it. So look for on-screen interactive learning packages if you’d really rather not use books. Many studies have proved that we remember much more when we involve as many senses as possible, and we get practically involved in what we’re studying.

Top of the range study programs now offer easy-to-use DVD or CD ROM’s. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll find things easier to remember by way of the expert demonstrations. You can then test yourself by utilising the practice lab’s and modules. Always insist on a look at some courseware examples from your training provider. You should ask for demo’s from instructors, slideshows and interactive labs where you get to practice.

Choose CD and DVD ROM based physical training media in all circumstances. You can then avoid all the difficulties of broadband ‘downtime’ or slow-speeds.

A useful feature offered by some training providers is a Job Placement Assistance program. It’s intention is to steer you into your first IT role. Don’t get caught up in this feature – it isn’t unusual for their marketing department to overstate it’s need. At the end of the day, the still growing need for IT personnel in Britain is what will enable you to get a job.

Having said that, it’s important to have advice and support about your CV and interviews though; and we’d recommend everyone to bring their CV up to date as soon as they start a course – don’t delay until you’ve graduated or passed any exams. Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. A surprising amount of junior positions are got by students (who’ve only just left first base.) If you don’t want to travel too far to work, then it’s quite likely that a local (but specialised) recruitment consultancy could work much better for you than the trainer’s recruitment division, for they’re far more likely to have insider knowledge of the jobs that are going locally.

A constant frustration for some course providers is how hard students are prepared to study to pass exams, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the position they have acquired skills for. Don’t give up when the best is yet to come.

At times people don’t comprehend what IT means. It’s stimulating, innovative, and means you’re doing your bit in the gigantic wave of technology affecting everyones lives in the 21st century. We are really only just starting to understand how this will truly impact our way of life. The way we communicate and interact with everyone around us will be inordinately affected by technology and the web.

The standard IT worker over this country as a whole has been shown to receive significantly more money than equivalent professionals in much of the rest of the economy. Average salaries are hard to beat nationally. Demand for properly certified IT professionals is a fact of life for the significant future, because of the continuous increase in IT dependency in commerce and the vast skills gap that we still have.

A lot of training companies will only offer support available from 9-6 (office hours) and sometimes later on specific days; most won’t answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends. Avoid, like the plague, any organisations who use call-centres ‘out-of-hours’ – with the call-back coming in during office hours. It’s not a lot of help when you’ve got study issues and need an answer now.

Top training companies have many support offices across multiple time-zones. An online system provides an interactive interface to join them all seamlessly, at any time you choose, help is at hand, without any problems or delays. You can’t afford to accept anything less. Direct-access 24×7 support is really your only option when it comes to computer-based courses. Perhaps you don’t intend to study during the evenings; but for the majority of us however, we’re at work when traditional support if offered.

To become a proficient web designer qualified appropriately for the job market today, you should find training in Adobe Dreamweaver. The complete Adobe Web Creative Suite additionally should be understood in detail. This will introduce you to Action Script and Flash, (and more), and will prepare you for the Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) or Adobe Certified Professional (ACP) accreditation.

To become a web designer of professional repute however, there are other things to consider. You’ll be required to have knowledge of some programming essentials like HTML, PHP and MySQL. A firm grounding in Search Engine Optimisation and E Commerce will also improve your CV and employability.

We’d all like to believe that our jobs will remain secure and our work futures are protected, but the likely scenario for most jobs throughout the UK right now appears to be that there is no security anymore. In actuality, security now only emerges through a fast increasing marketplace, driven by a lack of trained workers. It’s this alone that creates the correct background for market-security – a more attractive situation all round.

The Information Technology (IT) skills shortage throughout Great Britain falls in at just over 26 percent, according to the 2006 e-Skills survey. Alternatively, you could say, this means that the UK can only find 3 certified professionals for each 4 positions that are available currently. This single notion alone underpins why Great Britain needs considerably more people to get into the IT sector. While the market is developing at such a quick pace, it’s unlikely there’s any better market worth considering for your new career.

Beginning from the idea that we have to home-in on the area of most interest first, before we can weigh up what training course meets that requirement, how do we know the correct route? How can we possibly grasp what is involved in a particular job when it’s an alien environment to us? Often we haven’t met someone who works in that sector anyway. To get through to the essence of this, we need to discuss many different aspects:

* Your personal interests and hobbies – as they can define what areas will provide a happy working life.

* Is it your desire to pull off a specific aspiration – for instance, becoming self-employed someday?

* What salary and timescale needs that are important to you?

* Because there are so many markets to choose from in the IT industry – you’ll need to gain some key facts on what sets them apart.

* Our advice is to think deeply about any sacrifices you’ll need to make, as well as what commitment and time you’ll put into your education.

When all is said and done, the most intelligent way of covering these is through a long chat with an experienced advisor who knows the industry well enough to be able to guide you.

An advisor that doesn’t ask many questions – the likelihood is they’re just a salesperson. If they push a particular product before looking at your personality and current experience level, then you know it’s true. Often, the training inception point for a trainee with experience can be largely dissimilar to the student with no experience. If this is your initial stab at IT study then you should consider whether to begin with a user-skills course first.

Getting your first commercial position can feel more straightforward if you’re offered a Job Placement Assistance program. The honest truth is that it isn’t a complex operation to get the right work – as long as you’re correctly trained and certified; employers in this country need your skills.

Nevertheless, don’t leave it until you’ve qualified before bringing your CV up to date. As soon as you start a course, list what you’re working on and place it on jobsites! Getting onto the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s is more than not being regarded at all. A decent number of junior jobs are offered to people who are still at an early stage in their studies. If you’d like to keep travelling time and costs to a minimum, then you may well find that a local (but specialised) recruitment consultancy could serve you better than some national concern, because they are much more inclined to know what’s available near you.

Fundamentally, if you put the same amount of effort into securing your first IT position as into training, you won’t have any problems. A number of men and women strangely conscientiously work through their course materials and then just stop once they’ve got certified and would appear to think that businesses will just discover them.

Student support is absolutely essential – locate a good company that provides 24×7 direct access, as anything else will annoy you and definitely impede your ability to learn. Try and find training with help available at any time of the day or night (no matter if it’s in the middle of the night on a weekend!) You want access directly to professional tutors, and not a message system as this will slow you down – consistently being held in a queue for a call-back at a convenient time for them.

Top training providers offer an internet-based 24 hours-a-day package utilising a variety of support centres from around the world. You’ll have a simple interface that seamlessly selects the best facility available irrespective of the time of day: Support when it’s needed. Never make do with less than you need and deserve. Online 24×7 support is really your only option when it comes to IT training. Maybe late-evening study is not your thing; often though, we’re working at the time when most support is available.

by Jason Kendall

In today’s high speed society, support workers who have the ability to solve problems with networks and PC’s, and give ongoing help to users, are hugely valuable in all sections of the business environment. Because of the daunting complexities of technology, growing numbers of IT professionals are needed to look after the various different areas we rely on.

There are a plethora of jobs and positions available in Information Technology. Picking the right one in this uncertainty can be very difficult. Flicking through a list of odd-sounding and meaningless job titles is just a waste of time. The majority of us don’t really appreciate what our next-door neighbours do at work each day – so we have no hope of understanding the intricacies of any specific IT role. Arriving at a well-informed resolution really only appears via a meticulous investigation of several different areas:

* Your hobbies and interests – often these highlight what possibilities will provide a happy working life.

* Why you want to consider stepping into IT – maybe you’d like to achieve some personal goal like working from home for example.

* The income needs you have?

* Many students don’t properly consider the energy demanded to achieve their goals.

* The level of commitment and effort you’ll have available to put into your training.

For most people, getting to the bottom of all these ideas will require meeting with an experienced pro that can explain things properly. And we don’t just mean the accreditations – but the commercial requirements and expectations also.

We’re often asked why academic qualifications are being overtaken by more qualifications from the commercial sector? Key company training (in industry terminology) is more effective in the commercial field. Industry has become aware that this level of specialised understanding is essential to handle an increasingly more technical commercial environment. Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe are the key players in this arena. Clearly, a certain amount of closely linked detail must be taught, but core specialised knowledge in the required areas gives a vendor educated person a real head start.

As long as an employer understands what they’re looking for, then they just need to look for someone with a specific qualification. The syllabuses are set to exacting standards and can’t change from one establishment to the next (in the way that degree courses can).

Any program that you’re going to undertake should always lead to a nationally (or globally) recognised qualification as an end-result – not a useless ‘in-house’ piece of paper. To an employer, only the top companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA (for example) will get you short-listed. Anything less just won’t hit the right spot.

Look at the following points and pay great regard to them if you think that over-used sales technique about ‘guaranteeing’ exams sounds like a benefit to the student:

You’re paying for it one way or another. It certainly isn’t free – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package. Trainees who enter their exams one by one, funding them one at a time are far more likely to pass first time. They’re mindful of their spending and so are more inclined to make sure they’re ready.

Shouldn’t you be looking to not pay up-front, but at the appropriate time, instead of paying a premium to the college, and to do it in a local testing office – rather than possibly hours away from your area? Including money in your training package for exam fees (which also includes interest if you’ve taken out a loan) is a false economy. Don’t line companies bank accounts with extra money of yours simply to help their cash-flow! Many will hope you don’t even take them all – but they won’t refund the cash. It’s worth noting, in the majority of cases of ‘exam guarantees’ – you are not in control of when you can do your re-takes. You’ll have to prove conclusively that you can pass before they’ll pay for another exam.

Splashing out often many hundreds of pounds extra on ‘Exam Guarantees’ is foolish – when consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

A ridiculously large number of organisations only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and avoid focusing on the reasons for getting there – which is of course employment. You should always begin with where you want to get to – don’t get hung-up on the training vehicle. Never let yourself become part of that group who set off on a track that sounds really ‘interesting’ and ‘fun’ – only to end up with a qualification for a job they hate.

It’s well worth a long chat to see what expectations industry may have of you. Which particular certifications they’ll want you to gain and how to gain experience. Spend some time thinking about how far you’d like to go as it will often force you to choose a particular set of exams. We recommend that students always seek guidance and advice from a skilled advisor before making your final decision on some particular learning course, so there’s little doubt that the specific package will give the skills necessary.

How can people claim that Duke basketball is on the way down? It seems like everyone in the world is echoing this sentiment these days, but there are so many things they're overlooking.

by Albert Womack

How can people claim that Duke basketball is on the way down? It seems like everyone in the world is echoing this sentiment these days, but there are so many things they’re overlooking.

Duke’s supposed slide is of course linked to what all Duke fans already know: Duke hasn’t won the National Championship since 2001 and hasn’t made a final four since 2004.

Is this how we gauge a team’s success? By NCAA championships (one winner each year) and final fours (four teams out of hundreds)? If that’s the case, I’m a happy fan of a failed team.

Experts in the media, and some fans of Duke, all think that the fate of the Blue Devils is uncertain. The way they speak, you’d think that Duke was crumbling before our very eyes.

Mike Krzyzewski’s recent announcement that he was signing back up to coach the 2012 Olympic Basketball team has exacerbated that sentiment in a big way. Many believe the Olympic team distracts him from his day job. Forget the fact he can only do so much in the summer with Duke and that many of his current recruits are bragging about his experience with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James to fellow recruits.

Which college basketball team won last year’s coveted ACC tournament? And which basketball team has won more games during the last decade than any other team? Oh, that’s right – the Duke Blue Devils.

To me, a slide is Kentucky’s recent NCAA tournament drought, although that is likely to end pretty soon. A slide is UNC winning only eight games a few years back or Indiana’s embarrassment over the last few seasons.

Duke has literally won 20+ games for each of the last 10 years, and is always in the discussion when it comes down to ACC champion or even NCAA champion. How can one label them as a failure?

Duke’s recruiting may have taken some hits, and Duke has lost some players to transferring and the NBA, but their success is unquestionable. Is it what they want or what Duke fans want? No. Is it a sign of some pending apocalypse? Not likely.

I read a local sports column last week that predicted Duke as the 2010 ACC champion. Duke? The doomed team with its glory days in the past? What a shocker.

What kind of things do you expect the finest Microsoft accredited suppliers to give a student in the United Kingdom at present? Clearly, the ultimate in Microsoft authorised training routes, supplying a selection of courses to lead you into a selection of professions with IT. Perhaps you’d want to be given advice on the types of jobs available to you when you’ve finished studying, and what sort of person those jobs might be right for. The majority of students like to discuss what would suit them individually. Training must be tailored to make the most of your skills and abilities. So, once you’ve decided on the most fruitful career for you, you’ll then need to look at what is the most suitable program to see you into your career.

For the most part, the average IT hopeful doesn’t know how they should get into IT, let alone what sector to focus their retraining program on. Working through a list of IT job-titles is next to useless. Most of us have no concept what our good friends do at work – so what chance do we have in understanding the subtleties of a new IT role. The key to answering this predicament properly stems from an in-depth talk over some important points:

* The type of personality you have and interests – what kind of working tasks you enjoy or dislike.

* Why you’re looking at getting involved with the IT industry – it could be you’re looking to overcome a life-long goal such as being self-employed for example.

* Does salary have a higher place on your list of priorities than other requirements.

* With everything that the IT industry encapsulates, you’ll need to be able to understand how they differ.

* Our advice is to think deeply about the amount of time and effort you’ll put into your training.

When all is said and done, the best way of investigating all this is by means of a meeting with an advisor who understands the market well enough to give you the information required.

You have to make sure that all your exams are what employers want – don’t bother with studies that only give in-house certificates. Unless your qualification is issued by a company like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe, then chances are it could have been a waste of time and effort – as it’ll be an unknown commodity.

Don’t accept anything less than accredited simulation materials and an exam preparation system as part of your training package. Confirm that the mock exams haven’t just got questions from the right areas, but additionally ask them in the way that the actual final exam will pose them. This can really throw some trainees if the questions are phrased in unfamiliar formats. Clearly, it’s very crucial to know that you’ve thoroughly prepared for the real exam prior to going for it. Going over mock-up tests adds to your knowledge bank and will save a lot of money on wasted exam attempts.

The world of information technology is one of the most stimulating and innovative industries that you could be a part of. Being up close and personal with technology means you’re a part of the huge progress affecting everyone who lives in the 21st century. We’re only just starting to understand how all this will mould and change our lives. How we interrelate with the rest of the world will be massively affected by computers and the internet.

The money in IT isn’t to be sniffed at also – the average salary across the UK for an average person working in IT is noticeably more than in the rest of the economy. It’s likely that you’ll earn a whole lot more than you’d typically expect to bring in elsewhere. It seems there is not a hint of a downturn for IT jobs development throughout this country. The industry continues to grow hugely, and as we have a significant shortage of skilled professionals, it’s not likely that there’ll be any kind of easing off for quite some time to come.

We’re often asked why traditional degrees are being replaced by more commercial certificates? Industry is of the opinion that to learn the appropriate commercial skills, certified accreditation supplied for example by Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe most often has much more specialised relevance – at a far reduced cost both money and time wise. Higher education courses, for example, become confusing because of vast amounts of background study – and a syllabus that’s too generalised. Students are then prevented from getting enough specific knowledge about the core essentials.

Think about if you were the employer – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. What should you do: Trawl through reams of different degrees and college qualifications from several applicants, having to ask what each has covered and what commercial skills they’ve mastered, or pick out specific commercial accreditations that perfectly fit your needs, and then select who you want to interview from that. Your interviews are then about personal suitability – rather than on the depth of their technical knowledge.

If it’s Cisco training you’re after, but you’re new to working with routers, the chances are your first course should be the Cisco CCNA qualification. This educates you in the knowledge you need to understand routers. The internet is constructed from huge numbers of routers, and large companies with multiple departments and sites also rely on them to allow their networks of computers to communicate.

Getting this certification will mean it’s likely you’ll end up working for large commercial ventures that are spread out geographically, but still want internal communication. Other usual roles could be with an internet service provider. Both types of jobs command good salaries.

Find a bespoke training program that will take you through a specific training path to make sure that you have comprehensive skills and knowledge prior to embarking on the Cisco skills.

If you’re considering a training company which is still using workshops as a benefit of their course, then listen to these difficulties encountered by most students:

* Constant travelling to and from the centre – often very long trips.

* If you’re working, then Monday to Friday workshops cause problems at work. Typically you are facing 2-3 days at a time as well.

* Let’s not disregard lost holiday time. Often, we get 4 weeks annual leave. If half is given up to classes, then we aren’t going to be doing much vacationing.

* ‘In-Centre’ workshop days often get fully subscribed quite quickly, giving us the only option of a slot that doesn’t really suit.

* You may prefer to move at a somewhat more suitable pace – rather than be dictated to by the rest of the class. Sometimes this causes a lot of tension amongst the class.

* A lot of trainees report that the (not inconsiderable) costs of travelling back and forth to the training venue and paying for food and accommodation gets very expensive.

* Most students want their training to remain private thus avoiding all come-back in their work.

* Who amongst us hasn’t avoided putting our hand’s up, because we wanted to look smarter?

* Working and living away – a fair few attendees need to live or work somewhere else for certain parts of their study. Days in-centre are hard to get to, yet the monies have already been handed over with your initial fees.

The ultimate convenience is by viewing a pre-made workshop – enabling you to learn at any time of day. Consider… If you have a laptop then you’re free to work wherever you happen to be at that time. And 24×7 support is only a web-browser click away in case of difficulty. Simply watch and re-watch the modules as many times as you want or need. And of course, you won’t need to write any notes as you’ll have direct access to the instruction whenever you want to go back to it. Essentially: Time and money is saved, you have reduced hassle and you avoid polluting the skies.

The market provides an excess of job availability in IT. Arriving at the correct choice for yourself is a mammoth decision. Working through a list of IT job-titles is a complete waste of time. Surely, most of us don’t even know what our own family members do for a living – so what chance do we have in understanding the intricacies of a particular IT career. Achieving any kind of right answer will only come through a meticulous study across many changing factors:

* Your individual personality and interests – what work-oriented areas please or frustrate you.

* Are you aiming to realise a specific aim – like working from home as quickly as possible?

* How highly do you rate salary – is it of prime importance, or does job satisfaction rate further up on the scale of your priorities?

* Learning what the main work areas and sectors are – and what differentiates them.

* How much effort you’re prepared to spend on getting qualified.

The best way to avoid the barrage of jargon, and uncover the best path to success, have an in-depth discussion with an industry expert and advisor; an individual that will cover the commercial realities and truth and of course all the qualifications.

Many students assume that the school and FE college track is the way they should go. Why then are commercially accredited qualifications beginning to overtake it? As we require increasingly more effective technological know-how, industry has had to move to specialist courses that can only be obtained from the actual vendors – that is companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA. Often this saves time and money for the student. Clearly, a reasonable amount of associated detail must be learned, but precise specialisation in the areas needed gives a vendor trained person a huge edge.

Imagine if you were an employer – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. Which is the most straightforward: Go through loads of academic qualifications from several applicants, struggling to grasp what they’ve learned and what workplace skills have been attained, or pick out specific commercial accreditations that precisely match your needs, and then select who you want to interview from that. The interview is then more about the person and how they’ll fit in – rather than establishing whether they can do a specific task.

Anybody thinking about training for the IT sector will soon realise that there are a diverse range of courses available to them. Prior to getting started, seek out a training company that has advisors, so you can be educated on the type of work your course will lead you to. You may well discover job roles you didn’t know about. Training ranges from Microsoft User Skills to Databases, Programming, Networking and Web Design. There is a huge amount of choice and so it’s probably best to talk through your options with an industry expert before you confirm the course you want: the last thing you want to do is learn about a subject for a job you’d actually hate!

Because there are such a lot of low cost, simple to follow training programs and help, you’re sure to find something that will get you to your destination.

Working on revolutionary new technology gives you the best job satisfaction ever. Your actions are instrumental in shaping the next few decades. We are really only just starting to get a handle on what this change will mean to us. How we communicate and interact with everyone around us will be significantly affected by technology and the internet.

A regular IT employee throughout Britain can demonstrate that they get considerably more money than his or her counterpart outside of IT. Standard IT wages are hard to beat nationally. It’s no secret that there is a great UK-wide demand for trained and qualified IT technicians. It follows that as growth in the industry shows little sign of contracting, it appears this pattern will continue for the significant future.

Those that are drawn to this type of work are often very practical, and don’t always take well to classrooms, and endless reading of dry academic textbooks. If this is putting you off studying, go for more modern interactive training, where learning is video-based. Studies have consistently confirmed that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, is much more conducive to long-term memory.

Learning is now available in the form of CD and DVD ROM’s, so you can study at your own computer. Video streaming means you can watch instructors demonstrating how to perform the required skill, and then practice yourself – in an interactive lab. It makes sense to see some examples of the kind of training materials you’ll be using before you make your decision. You should expect videoed instructor demonstrations and audio-visual elements backed up by interactive lab’s.

Opt for physical media such as CD or DVD ROM’s if possible. This then avoids all the potential pitfalls with internet connection failure and issues with signal quality.

Beware of putting too much emphasis, as many people do, on the training course itself. Training is not an end in itself; you’re training to become commercially employable. Stay focused on what it is you want to achieve. It’s common, for example, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying and then spend 20 miserable years in a tiresome job role, simply because you did it without the correct research when it was needed – at the start.

Get to grips with earning potential and how ambitious you are. Usually, this will point the way to what precise accreditations will be expected and what you can expect to give industry in return. Your likely to need help from a professional that can best explain the industry you think may suit you, and will be able to provide ‘A day in the life of’ explanation for that career-path. These things are absolutely essential because you need to know if you’re going down the right road.

A sneaky way that training companies make a lot more is through up-front charges for exams then giving it ‘Exam Guarantee’ status. This looks like a great idea for the student, until you think it through:

Obviously it isn’t free – you’re still coughing up for it – it’s just been included in your package price. It’s well known in the industry that when trainees fund their relevant examinations, one after the other, they will be much more likely to pass first time – since they’re aware of their payment and therefore will put more effort into their preparation.

Don’t you think it’s more sensible to not pay up-front, but when you take the exam, instead of paying a premium to the training college, and to take it closer to home – instead of miles away at the college’s beck and call? Huge profits are secured by a significant number of organisations that incorporate exam fees into the cost of the course. For quite legitimate reasons, a number of students don’t get to do their exams and so the company is quids-in. Surprising as it sounds, there are training companies who rely on that fact – and that’s how they increase their profits. Most companies will require you to sit pre-tests and not allow you to re-take an exam until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – which makes an ‘Exam Guarantee’ frankly useless.

Prometric and VUE exams are approximately 112 pounds in the UK. What’s the point of paying huge ‘Exam Guarantee’ fees (usually wrapped up in the course package price) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

A skilled and professional consultant (in contrast with a salesperson) will ask questions and seek to comprehend your current situation. This is vital for working out the starting point for your education. If you have a strong background, or maybe some real-world experience (maybe some existing accreditation?) then it’s more than likely the point from which you begin your studies will be different from someone with no background whatsoever. If this is your initial crack at studying to take an IT exam then you may want to cut your teeth on user-skills and software training first.
