Should you be doing a search for training tracks certified by Microsoft, you’ll obviously be expecting training providers to supply a wide selection of some of the top learning programmes on the market today. Maybe you’d choose to talk to industry experts, who could help you sort out which job role would be right for you, and what sort of duties are appropriate for someone with your character and ability. Having selected the area you want to get into, your next search is for a suitable training program customised to your needs. The standard of teaching should leave no room for complaints.

A top of the range training course package will have fully authorised exam preparation packages. As most examination boards in IT come from the United States, you need to become familiar with their phraseology. It isn’t good enough simply going through the right questions – they have to be in the same format as the actual exams. Simulations and practice exams can be invaluable in helping you build your confidence – so when it comes to taking your actual exams, you don’t get uptight.

Now, why ought we to be looking at commercially accredited qualifications rather than more traditional academic qualifications taught at schools and Further Education colleges? Vendor-based training (as it’s known in the industry) is most often much more specialised. Industry has realised that this level of specialised understanding is vital to service the demands of a technologically complex marketplace. Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe are the big boys in this field. Academic courses, for example, clog up the training with a lot of background study – and much too wide a syllabus. Students are then held back from getting enough core and in-depth understanding on a specific area.

The crux of the matter is this: Recognised IT certifications provide exactly what an employer needs – the title says it all: i.e. I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Windows XP Administration and Configuration’. Consequently companies can look at the particular needs they have and what certifications are needed for the job.

Get rid of the typical salesman that just tells you what course you should do without a thorough investigation so as to understand your abilities as well as level of experience. They should be able to select from a wide-enough range of products so they’re actually equipped to provide you with what’s right for you. It’s worth remembering, if you have some relevant previous certification, then it’s not unreasonable to expect to pick-up at a different starting-point to a student who’s starting from scratch. If you’re a new trainee beginning IT exams and training anew, it can be useful to start out slowly, beginning with a user-skills course first. This is often offered with most accreditation programs.

Many commercial training providers will only offer basic 9am till 6pm support (maybe a little earlier or later on certain days); most won’t answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends. Many only provide email support (too slow), and phone support is usually just a call-centre that will take the information and email an instructor – who’ll call back sometime over the next 1-3 days, when it’s convenient to them. This isn’t a lot of good if you’re stuck with a particular problem and only have certain times available in which to do your studies.

If you look properly, you’ll find the very best companies which offer online direct access support 24×7 – even in the middle of the night. Seek out a trainer that gives this level of learning support. As only live 24×7 round-the-clock support gives you the confidence to make it.

So many training providers only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and completely avoid the reasons for getting there – which is of course employment. Always start with the end in mind – don’t make the vehicle more important than the destination. It’s common, in some situations, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying only to end up putting 20 long years into a tiresome job role, as an upshot of not doing some quality research when it was needed – at the start.

Prioritise understanding the exact expectations industry will have. Which qualifications they’ll want you to gain and how you’ll build your experience level. It’s also worth spending time considering how far you’d like to get as it may affect your choice of accreditations. Have a chat with someone that has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and who can give you a detailed run-down of what tasks are going to make up a typical day for you. Getting to the bottom of all this before you start on any training program has obvious benefits.

Four specialist training areas feature in the complete CompTIA A+ course, but you’re just required to achieve pass marks in 2 for your A+ qualification. We would advise however that only learning about 2 of the four specialities could leave gaps in your knowledge. At least learn about all four – for greater confidence in the world of work.

Passing the A+ exam on its own will allow you to mend and maintain computers and Macs; ones that are most often not part of a network – which is for the most part the home market. Perhaps you see yourself as someone who is a member of a large organisation – fixing and supporting networks, build on A+ with Network+, or follow the Microsoft route – MCP’s, MCSA or MCSE because it’s necessary to have a deeper understanding of how networks work.

Incorporating exams up-front and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is a common method with a good many training companies. But look at the facts:

In this day and age, we have to be a little bit more aware of sales ploys – and generally we cotton on to the fact that we’re actually paying for it (it’s not a freebie because they like us so much!) Trainees who take exams one at a time, funding them one at a time are much better placed to get through first time. They’re aware of what they’ve paid and prepare more appropriately to make sure they’re ready.

Doesn’t it make more sense to not pay up-front, but when you’re ready, not to pay any mark-up to a college, and to take it closer to home – rather than possibly hours away from your area? Is there a good reason to pay interest on a bigger loan than is necessary because you’ve paid early for exam fees when there was no need to? A lot of profit is netted by organisations getting money in early for exam fees – and then cashing in when they’re not all taken. Re-takes of previously unsuccessful exams via organisations with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ inevitably are heavily regulated. You will be required to do mock exams until you’ve proven that you’re likely to pass.

Exams taken at VUE and Prometric centres are currently clocking in at an average of 112 pounds in the United Kingdom today. Why spend so much more on charges for ‘Exam Guarantees’ (most often hidden in the package) – when a quality course, support and study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will really guarantee success.

Being at the forefront of the cutting-edge of new technology is as thrilling as it comes. You become one of a team of people creating a future for us all. Technological changes and connections through the internet is going to spectacularly alter the way we live our lives in the near future; overwhelmingly so.

The standard IT technician in Great Britain will also receive significantly more than fellow workers in much of the rest of the economy. Average salaries are some of the best to be had nationwide. It seems there is a lot more room for IT sector development in Great Britain as a whole. The industry is continuing to expand hugely, and as we have a skills gap that means we only typically have three IT workers for every four jobs it’s highly unlikely that there’ll be any kind of easing off for years to come.

One thing you must always insist on is 24×7 round-the-clock support from dedicated instructors and mentors. So many companies we come across only seem to want to help while they’re in the office (9am till 6pm, Monday till Friday usually) and nothing at the weekends. Try and find training with proper support available at all hours of the day and night (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) Ensure you get access directly to professional tutors, and not a call-centre that will take messages so you’re constantly waiting for a call-back during office hours.

The very best programs tend to use an online access 24 hours-a-day facility combining multiple support operations from around the world. You’re offered a single, easy-to-use interface which accesses the most appropriate office irrespective of the time of day: Support when it’s needed. If you accept anything less than direct-access 24×7 support, you’ll regret it. You may not need it during the night, but consider weekends, late evenings or early mornings.

It’s likely that you’ve always enjoyed practical work – a ‘hands-on’ personality type. Usually, the world of book-reading and classrooms is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but you really wouldn’t enjoy it. Check out video-based multimedia instruction if you’d really rather not use books. If we can study while utilising as many senses as possible, then the results are usually dramatically better.

Modern training can now be done at home via self-contained CD or DVD materials. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll find things easier to remember through their teaching and demonstrations. You can then test yourself by practicing and interacting with the software. Be sure to get a look at some courseware examples from the school that you’re considering. The package should contain slide-shows, instructor-led videos and fully interactive skills-lab’s.

It’s usually bad advice to select online only courseware. With highly variable reliability and quality from your average broadband company, you should always obtain actual CD or DVD ROM’s.

All programs you’re considering should always lead to a nationally accepted certification at the end – and not some unimportant ‘in-house’ printed certificate to hang in your hallway. The top IT companies like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA each have internationally acknowledged proficiency programs. Huge conglomerates such as these will make sure you’re employable.

by Jason Kendall

A Cisco training course is designed for people who wish to understand and work with network switches and routers. Routers connect networks of computers via dedicated lines or the internet. It’s a good idea that you should start with CCNA. It’s not advisable to launch directly into your CCNP for it’s full of complexities – and you really need experience before you take this on.

The sort of jobs available with this kind of skill mean you’ll be more likely to work for big organisations that have various different locations but need their computer networks to talk to each other. The other possibility is joining an internet service provider. These jobs are well paid and in demand.

Achieving CCNA is perfectly sufficient to start with; don’t be pushed into attempting your CCNP. With experience, you can decide whether CCNP is something you want to do. If you decide to become more qualified, you’ll have the knowledge you need to master your CCNP – as it’s a very complex course – and ought not to be underestimated.

Beginning from the idea that we have to locate the area of most interest first and foremost, before we can even weigh up which development program ticks the right boxes, how do we know the way that suits us? Because with no commercial background in the IT industry, how can most of us be expected to know what any job actually involves? Reflection on these different factors is required when you need to get to a solution that suits you:

* What nature of person you consider yourself to be – the tasks that you get enjoyment from, and on the other side of the coin – what don’t you like doing.

* Are you driven to re-train because of a particular raison d’etre – e.g. are you looking at working from home (self-employment?)?

* The income needs that are important to you?

* Because there are so many ways to train in Information Technology – there’s a need to achieve some background information on what differentiates them.

* Having a good look into the effort, commitment and time that you can put aside.

Ultimately, the only real way of understanding everything necessary is via a good talk with an experienced advisor who has enough background to lead you to the correct decision.

Now, why ought we to be looking at qualifications from the commercial sector rather than more traditional academic qualifications taught at the state educational establishments? Key company training (in industry terminology) is more effective in the commercial field. Industry is aware that such specialised knowledge is essential to service the demands of a technically advancing commercial environment. Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe dominate in this arena. Obviously, a certain quantity of relevant additional detail must be learned, but essential specifics in the required areas gives a commercially trained person a huge edge.

As long as an employer understands what areas they need covered, then all it takes is an advert for a person with the appropriate exam numbers. The syllabuses are set to exacting standards and can’t change from one establishment to the next (as academic syllabuses often do).

‘In-Centre workshop days’ get touted as an important element by many training academies. After a good chat with the majority of computer industry hopefuls who’ve attended a few, you’ll find they generally end up being seen as a mistake due to many reasons:

* Constant visits to the centre – 100’s of miles usually.

* Workshop accessibility; often Monday to Friday and sometimes two to three days together. It’s never convenient to take the required work-leave.

* I think you’d agree that we usually think four weeks vacation allowance isn’t enough by far. Sacrifice at least half of this for educational events and watch how much harder things become.

* In a situation where running costs are very high, many colleges fill the classes up to the brim – which isn’t ideal (giving less time per student).

* Many students want to study at a slower or quicker pace than the rest of the class. Sometimes this causes tension in the class.

* You shouldn’t overlook the extra financial outlay of arranging transport or several days bed and breakfast either. Don’t be surprised to find this become many hundreds of pounds more – sometimes thousands. Take some time to add it all up – it’ll shock and surprise you.

* Training privacy can be high on the list of priorities to many students. Why give up any job advancement, salary hikes or achievement at work because you’re getting trained in a different area. If your work discovers you’re putting yourself through training in a different industry, how will they regard you?

* Don’t think it’s unusual for trainees not to put a question forward that they would like answered – just down to the fact that they’re with their peers.

* Living away for part of your working week – many students have to work or live somewhere else for part of their study. Classes are therefore hard to get to, but you’ve already coughed up the readies as part of your fees.

To find a more flexible route, make use of filmed classes wherever you want to take them – at a time that’s convenient to you – not some other person. Consider… With a laptop then you could learn absolutely anywhere you want (within reason!) And live 24×7 support is just a web-browser away in case you get challenged. Irrespective of how regularly you want to re-do a section, video-based instructors aren’t ever likely to rush you! And remember, as an added bonus, you don’t have to worry about any note-taking. Everything’s laid out there for immediate use. The final upshot: Much less stress and hassle, money saved, and you’ve avoided all travel.

What could a trainee searching for certified training from Microsoft expect to discover? Patently, companies ought to have a variety of routes that meet the requirements of training tracks certified by Microsoft. Maybe you’d choose to look for a person who’s got industry experience, who could offer counsel on which area of the industry would be right for you, and what sort of tasks are a good match for somebody with your personality. Once you’ve decided on the area you want to get into, you’ll need a relevant course customised to go with your skills and abilities. Your course material should leave no room for complaints.

It’s essential to have an authorised exam preparation system as part of your course package. Students regularly can find themselves confused by going through practice questions that are not from official boards. It’s not uncommon that the way questions are phrased can be quite different and it’s vital that you know this. It’s a good idea to request some practice exams in order to verify your understanding at all times. Simulated or practice exams prepare you properly – then you’re much more at ease with the real thing.

The old fashioned style of teaching, involving piles of reference textbooks, can be pretty hard going sometimes. If you’re nodding as you read this, look for learning programmes that are multimedia based. Where possible, if we can involve all our senses in the learning process, then we often see hugely increased memory retention as a result.

Fully interactive motion videos utilising video demo’s and practice lab’s beat books hands-down. And they’re a lot more fun to do. Any company that you’re considering should be able to show you some simple examples of their courseware. You should hope for instructor-led videos and interactive areas to practice in.

Many companies provide online training only; sometimes you can get away with this – but, imagine the problems if internet access is lost or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. It is usually safer to have CD and DVD ROM materials that removes the issue entirely.

It’s so important to understand this key point: You have to get round-the-clock 24×7 support from professional instructors. Later, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t follow this rule rigidly. Look for training with help available at all hours of the day and night (even 1am on Sunday morning!) You want 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages – so you’re constantly waiting for a call-back – probably during office hours.

The best trainers utilise several support facilities from around the world. They use an online interactive interface to link them all seamlessly, any time of the day or night, help is just a click away, with no hassle or contact issues. Never make do with less than this. 24×7 support is the only viable option when it comes to computer-based learning. Perhaps you don’t intend to study during the evenings; usually though, we’re working while the support is live.

Qualifications from the commercial sector are now, very visibly, already replacing the more academic tracks into IT – but why is this happening? With fees and living expenses for university students climbing ever higher, together with the IT sector’s growing opinion that vendor-based training is often far more commercially relevant, there has been a big surge in CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA accredited training programmes that provide key skills to an employee for considerably less. Patently, a certain quantity of relevant additional detail needs to be learned, but focused specialisation in the particular job function gives a commercially trained person a distinct advantage.

When an employer knows what areas need to be serviced, then they simply need to advertise for the particular skill-set required. Commercial syllabuses are set to exacting standards and do not vary between trainers (like academia frequently can and does).

Being a part of the information technology industry is one of the more stimulating and innovative industries that you can get into right now. Being a member of a team working on breakthroughs in technology is to be a part of the massive changes affecting everyone who lives in the 21st century. Computing technology and communication through the internet is going to radically shape the direction of our lives in the future; remarkably so.

Wages in the IT sector aren’t to be ignored either – the usual income throughout Britain for an average man or woman in IT is considerably better than in the rest of the economy. Odds are you’ll make a whole lot more than you’d expect to earn doing other work. With the IT marketplace developing year on year, it’s predictable that demand for appropriately qualified IT professionals will remain buoyant for decades to come.

If it weren’t for a steady stream of well educated PC and network support staff, commercial enterprise in the United Kingdom (and around the world) would surely be drawn to a standstill. We have an ever growing requirement for technically able people to support both users and the systems they work with. The nation’s requirement for increasing numbers of skilled and qualified individuals grows, as we become consistently more dependent upon computers in the modern world.

Every program under consideration has to build towards a properly recognised exam at the end – and not a worthless ‘in-house’ piece of paper. From a commercial standpoint, only top businesses like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe (to give some examples) will get you into the interview seat. Nothing else hits the mark.

A so-called advisor who doesn’t dig around with lots of question – chances are they’re really a salesperson. If they wade straight in with a specific product before looking at your personality and current experience level, then it’s definitely the case. In some circumstances, the starting point of study for a trainee with some experience is hugely different to the student with no experience. If you’re a new trainee starting IT studies and exams anew, it’s often a good idea to ease in gradually, starting with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first. Usually this is packaged with any educational course.

Have you recently questioned your job security? For most people, this only rears its head when something goes wrong. Unfortunately, the painful truth is that true job security simply doesn’t exist anymore, for all but the most lucky of us. Where there are rising skills deficits together with escalating demand though, we always reveal a newer brand of security in the marketplace; driven by the conditions of constant growth, businesses struggle to find the staff required.

A rather worrying UK e-Skills analysis demonstrated that more than 26 percent of all available IT positions remain unfilled mainly due to an appallingly low number of properly qualified workers. It follows then that for every four jobs that exist in computing, businesses can only locate trained staff for 3 of the 4. Highly skilled and commercially accredited new workers are thus at a resounding premium, and in all likelihood it will stay that way for many years to come. With the market developing at such a rate, it’s unlikely there’s any better market worth taking into account as a retraining vehicle.

It’s important to understand: a actual training or a qualification isn’t the end-goal; the job or career that you want to end up in is. Too many training companies over-emphasise just the training course. You could be training for only a year and end up doing a job for a lifetime. Avoid the mistake of choosing what sounds like a very ‘interesting’ program and then put 10-20 years into a job you don’t like!

Never let your focus stray from where you want to go, and create a learning-plan from that – avoid getting them back-to-front. Keep your eyes on your goals and ensure that you’re training for a career that will keep you happy for many years. Have a conversation with an experienced industry advisor that has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and could provide a detailed run-down of the kind of things you’ll be doing on a daily basis. Contemplating this before starting out on a retraining path will prevent a lot of wasted time and effort.

It’s essential to have the current Microsoft (or any other key organisation’s) accredited exam simulation and preparation packages. Steer clear of depending on non-official exam preparation systems. The terminology of their questions is often somewhat different – and this leads to huge confusion in the actual examination. Clearly, it’s very important to ensure that you’ve thoroughly prepared for your final certified exam prior to going for it. Rehearsing ‘mock’ tests logs the information in your brain and saves you time and money on failed exams.

by Jason Kendall

The Microsoft MCSA course (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) is an ideal qualification for anyone wanting to become a technician in network support. Whether you already have experience but need a professional course with certification, or you are a beginner in the industry, you’ll quickly see how to select a course to suit your needs. Should you be contemplating entering the computing environment as a beginner, you’re very likely to need to have some coaching prior to studying for the MCP’s (Microsoft Certified Professional exams) that are necessary to get qualified at the MCSA level. Search for a training organisation that can create an ideal program to help you – it should be possible for you to talk this through with an advisor to work out the most suitable direction for you.

Often, students don’t think to check on a painfully important area – how their company actually breaks down and delivers the physical training materials, and into what particular chunks. The majority of training companies will set up a 2 or 3 year study programme, and send out each piece as you pass each exam. On the surface this seems reasonable – until you consider the following: What happens when you don’t complete every single exam? And what if you find the order of the modules counter-intuitive? Due to no fault of yours, you might take a little longer and not get all the study materials as a result.

To avoid any potential future issues, it’s normal for most trainees to request that all their modules (now paid for) are delivered immediately, and not in stages. It’s then up to you in which order and at what speed you want to work.

Doing your bit in the cutting-edge of new technology is as thrilling as it comes. You become one of a team of people creating a future for us all. We’ve barely started to get an inclination of how technology will influence everything we do. Technology and the web will significantly alter how we see and interrelate with the rest of the world over the coming years.

Should lifestyle be around the top on your scale of wants, you’ll be happy to know that the regular income for the majority of IT staff is much better than salaries in other market sectors. The requirement for professionally qualified and skilled IT workers is assured for many years to come, thanks to the constant expansion in this sector and the very large deficiency that remains.

It’s important to understand: a actual training program or a certification is not the ultimate goal; the career you’re training for is. Too many training companies place too much importance on the qualification itself. You may train for one year and then end up performing the job-role for decades. Avoid the mistake of finding what seems like a program of interest to you only to waste your life away with something you don’t even enjoy!

Make sure you investigate your leanings around career progression and earning potential, and how ambitious you are. You should understand what industry expects from you, which particular exams are needed and where you’ll pick-up experience from. Take advice from an experienced advisor, even if there’s a fee involved – it’s much safer and cheaper to find out at the beginning if you’ve chosen correctly, instead of finding out after 2 years that you aren’t going to enjoy the job you’ve chosen and now need to go back to square one.

Beginning from the viewpoint that it’s good to choose the employment that excites us first and foremost, before we’re able to weigh up which training course ticks the right boxes, how are we supposed to find the right path? Since without any commercial skills in IT, how can most of us understand what anyone doing a particular job actually does? Often, the key to unlocking this question appropriately stems from a deep conversation around a variety of topics:

* Personalities play a starring part – what gets you ‘up and running’, and what are the things that you really dislike.

* What sort of time-frame do you want for the training process?

* Is your income higher on your list of priorities than other requirements.

* Often, trainees don’t consider the time involved to gain all the necessary accreditation.

* You need to appreciate the differences between the myriad of training options.

For most of us, sifting through so much data will require meeting with an experienced pro that has direct industry experience. And we’re not only talking about the certifications – but the commercial expectations and needs of the market as well.

Including examination fees as an inclusive element of the package price and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams is common for many training course providers. But let’s examine why they really do it:

You’re paying for it one way or another. It certainly isn’t free – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package. The fact is that when students fund each progressive exam, at the time of taking them, they will be much more likely to qualify each time – as they are conscious of their payment and their application will be greater.

Does it really add up to pay a training college at the start of the course for examinations? Find the best deal you can at the time, rather than coughing up months or even a year or two in advance – and take it closer to home – rather than in some remote place. Why borrow the money or pay in advance (plus interest of course) on examinations when you don’t need to? A great deal of money is made by companies charging all their exam fees up-front – and then hoping that you won’t take them all. The majority of organisations will insist on pre-tests and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you have proved to them you have a good chance of passing – making an ‘exam guarantee’ just about worthless.

Due to typical VUE and Prometric tests in the United Kingdom costing around 112 pounds, it’s common sense to fund them one by one. Why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra at the beginning of your training? Consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

Network and PC support technicians are constantly sought after in the UK, as companies become progressively more dependent on their technical advice and ability to fix and repair. As we get to grips with the multifaceted levels of technological advances, many more qualified workers are being looked for to look after the various different areas we’ve come to rely on.

The somewhat scary thought of finding your first computer related job can be made easier by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance programme. With the huge need for more IT skills in Great Britain even when times are hard, there isn’t a great need to get too caught up in this feature though. It isn’t so complicated as you might think to land employment as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications.

Having said that, it’s important to have CV and Interview advice and support though; additionally, we would recommend everybody to get their CV updated as soon as they start a course – don’t wait for when you’re ready to start work. Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. Many junior support jobs are got by trainees who are still at an early stage in their studies. If you don’t want to travel too far to work, then you’ll often find that a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service might work much better for you than a centralised service, as they’re going to be familiar with the local job scene.

To bottom line it, as long as you put the same commitment into landing a job as into studying, you won’t have any problems. Some men and women strangely conscientiously work through their course materials and then call a halt once they’ve passed their exams and would appear to think that businesses will just discover them.

Speak with a practiced consultant and they’ll entertain you with many horror stories of salespeople ripping-off unsuspecting students. Stick to an experienced industry professional that asks lots of questions to discover the most appropriate thing for you – not for their pay-packet! Dig until you find the right starting point of study for you. It’s worth remembering, if in the past you’ve acquired any accreditation or direct-experience, then you can sometimes expect to commence studying further along than someone new to the industry. Starting with a foundation program first can be the best way to commence your IT programme, but depends on your skill level.

You have to make sure that all your qualifications are current and what employers are looking for – you’re wasting your time with studies that lead to in-house certificates. To an employer, only the major heavyweights such as Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe (to give some examples) provide enough commercial weight. Anything less just won’t hit the right spot.

Your training program should always include the very latest Microsoft (or Cisco, CompTIA etc.) authorised exam preparation packages. Ensure that your practice exams haven’t just got questions on the correct subjects, but are also posing them in the same way that the proper exam will phrase them. It really messes up students if they’re met with completely different formats and phraseologies. For many reasons, it’s essential to ensure that you’ve thoroughly prepared for the real exam prior to doing it. Rehearsing simulated exams logs the information in your brain and helps to avoid failed exams.

We can all agree: There really is pretty much no individual job security anywhere now; there can only be market and business security – companies can just drop any single member of staff if it fits the business’ commercial needs. We can however hit upon security at the market sector level, by looking for areas of high demand, together with a shortage of skilled staff.

The computer industry skills deficit in Great Britain is standing at just over twenty six percent, as shown by a recent e-Skills study. Quite simply, we can only fill 3 out of each 4 job positions in IT. Fully trained and commercially accredited new staff are thus at a resounding premium, and it’s estimated to remain so for a long time to come. While the market is developing at the speed it is, is there any other area of industry worth taking into account for a new career.

Anyone looking to get into the computer industry will soon realise that there are a variety of courses in existence. Before starting a training program, look for a training organisation with industry experts, so you can be educated on the type of work your training program is designed for. You could uncover employment opportunities you hadn’t previously thought of. The courses range from Microsoft User Skills to career courses in Web Design, Databases, Programming and Networking. There’s a great deal of choice and so the chances are you’ll want to talk through your options with an experienced advisor before you make your final decision: you don’t want to start the wrong training for something that doesn’t suit you!

By concentrating on service and delivery, training companies now exist with modern courses that blend the finest training and support for considerably less money than is charged by more out-dated organisations.

One crafty way that training providers make a big mark-up is by charging for exams up-front then giving it ‘Exam Guarantee’ status. This sounds impressive, till you look at the facts:

Patently it isn’t free – you’re still being charged for it – it’s just been included in your package price. It’s everybody’s ambition to qualify on the first attempt. Progressively working through your exams in order and funding them as you go sees you much better placed to get through first time – you revise thoroughly and think carefully about the costs.

Hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, and hang on to your cash. You’ll then be able to select where you sit the exam – so you can choose somewhere closer to home. A lot of questionable training course providers net a great deal of profit through getting in the money for all the exam fees up-front and hoping you won’t see them all through. Many training companies will insist that you take mock exams first and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you’ve proven conclusively that you can pass – making an ‘exam guarantee’ just about worthless.

Spending hundreds or even thousands extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is foolish – when consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will get you through.

Of all the important things to consider, one of the most essential is always proper direct-access 24×7 support via expert mentors and instructors. Too many companies only provide support to you inside of office hours (typically 9am-6pm) and sometimes a little earlier or later (but not weekends usually). Locate training schools with proper support available at all hours of the day and night (irrespective of whether it’s the wee hours on Sunday morning!) You’ll need direct-access to qualified mentors and tutors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages – so you’re parked in a queue of others waiting to be called back when it’s convenient for them.

As long as you look hard, you will find the top providers who recommend and use online direct access support around the clock – at any time of day or night. Never make the mistake of compromise when it comes to your support. The vast majority of IT hopefuls who give up, are in that situation because they didn’t get the support necessary for them.

Accredited exam simulation and preparation packages are vital – and should definitely be sought from your training supplier. Steer clear of relying on non-official preparation materials for exams. Their phraseology can be completely unlike authorised versions – and sometimes this can be a real headache when the proper exam time arrives. Always have some simulated exam questions so you can verify your comprehension whenever you need to. Simulated or practice exams add to your knowledge bank – so the real thing isn’t quite as scary.

Students often end up having issues because of a single courseware aspect very rarely considered: The breakdown of the course materials before being sent out to you. You may think that it makes sense (with most training taking 1-3 years for a full commercial certification,) that a training provider will issue a single section at a time, as you complete each part. Although: What would happen if you didn’t finish all the exams at the speed they required? Often the staged order doesn’t come as naturally as some other order of studying might.

In an ideal situation, you’d ask for every single material to be delivered immediately – meaning you’ll have all of them to come back to in the future – at any time you choose. This allows a variation in the order that you complete each objective as and when something more intuitive seems right for you.

Students who consider this area of study are usually quite practically-minded, and won’t enjoy sitting at a desk in class, and slogging through piles of books. If you identify with this, go for more modern interactive training, where learning is video-based. Learning psychology studies show that we remember much more when we receive multi-sensorial input, and we take action to use what we’ve learned.

Learning is now available on CD and DVD discs, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Through video streaming, you can sit back and watch the teachers showing you precisely how to do something, and then practice yourself – in an interactive lab. Don’t take any chances and look at some examples of the kind of training materials you’ll be using before you sign the purchase order. Always insist on video tutorials, instructor demo’s and interactive audio-visual sections with practice modules.

You’ll find that many companies will only provide purely on-line training; and although this is okay the majority of the time, imagine the problems if you lose your internet access or you get a slow connection speed. A safer solution is the provision of actual CD or DVD ROMs that removes the issue entirely.

If you want training in Cisco, a CCNA is in all probability what you'll need.

by Jason Kendall

If you want training in Cisco, a CCNA is in all probability what you’ll need. A Cisco training course is the way to go for those who wish to understand and work with network switches and routers. Routers connect networks of computers to other computer networks over dedicated lines or the internet.

You might end up joining an internet service provider or perhaps a national or international corporation which is located on multiple sites but needs to keep in touch. This career path is very well paid and quite specialised.

If you haven’t yet had any experience of routers, then studying up to CCNA is the right level to aim for – avoid being talked into doing a CCNP. After gaining experience in the working environment, you’ll know if CCNP is something you want to do.

A service that many training companies provide is a Job Placement Assistance program. This is designed to help you get your first commercial position. Don’t get caught up in this feature – it isn’t unusual for their marketing department to overstate it’s need. The fact of the matter is, the need for well trained IT people in the UK is what will make you attractive to employers.

CV and Interview advice and support is sometimes offered (alternatively, check out one of our sites for help). It’s essential that you work on your old CV right away – don’t wait until you’ve finished your exams! A good number of junior support jobs have been bagged by students who’re still on their course and have still to get qualified. At least this will get you on your way. You’ll normally experience quicker service from a local IT focused recruitment consultant or service than you will through a training provider’s centralised service, as they will be more familiar with the area and local employers.

A constant aggravation of various training course providers is how much people are prepared to work to get top marks in their exams, but how little effort that student will then put into getting the job they have qualified for. Don’t give up when the best is yet to come.

A capable and specialised advisor (as opposed to a salesman) will cover in some detail your current level of ability and experience. This is vital for establishing your starting point for training. If you’ve got any commercial experience or qualifications, it may be that your starting point of study is not the same as someone new to the industry. If this is your opening attempt at IT study then you might also want to start with some basic PC skills training first.

Don’t accept anything less than an accredited exam preparation programme as part of your training package. Confirm that the simulated exams aren’t just asking you the right questions in the right areas, but are also posing them in the same way that the proper exam will ask them. It can really throw some people if the phraseology and format is completely different. Be sure to ask for exam preparation tools so you can verify your knowledge at all times. Mock exams will help to boost your attitude – so the actual exam is much easier.

Student support is absolutely essential – look for a package providing 24×7 full access, as anything less will not satisfy and will also put a damper on the speed you move through things. Avoid those companies which use messaging services ‘out-of-hours’ – with your call-back scheduled for standard office hours. This is no use if you’re stuck and could do with an answer during your scheduled study period.

Top training companies have many support offices from around the world. Online access provides the interactive interface to link them all seamlessly, no matter what time you login, help is just a click away, without any problems or delays. Don’t compromise when it comes to your support. Most students who can’t get going properly, just need the right support system.

One crafty way that course providers make more money is via an ‘exam inclusive’ package and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams. It looks like a good deal, till you look at the facts:

Certainly it’s not free – you’re still being charged for it – the cost has just been rolled into the whole training package. If it’s important to you to pass first time, evidence suggests you must pay for one exam at a time, give it the priority it deserves and give the task sufficient application.

Shouldn’t you be looking to go for the best offer when you take the exam, not to pay the fees marked up by a training course provider, and also to sit exams more locally – instead of the remote centre that’s convenient only to the trainer? A lot of so-called credible training providers make a great deal of profit through getting paid for examinations upfront then hoping you won’t see them all through. Most companies will require you to sit pre-tests and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you have proved to them you have a good chance of passing – so an ‘Exam Guarantee’ comes with many clauses in reality.

Prometric and VUE exams are approximately 112 pounds in the UK. What’s the point of paying huge fees for ‘exam guarantees’ (often hidden in the cost) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and commitment, effort and practice with quality exam preparation systems are the factors that really get you through.

by Jason Kendall

It’s really great that you’re on the right track! A small number of workers say they enjoy their work, but the majority just bitch about it and that’s it. By looking for this it’s probable that you’re at least considering retraining, so well done to you. The next step is to discover where you want to go and get going.

With regard to specific training programs, look for an advisor who can help you sort out which area will be right for you. A person who will get an understanding of your personality, and find out the best career for you to work towards:

* Do you operate better working alone or do you find company is more important to you?

* Are you considering which market sector you choose to work in? (In this economy, it’s essential to choose carefully.)

* And how many years do you want to get out of your retraining, and can your chosen industry offer you that opportunity?

* Are you concerned with regard to the possibility of finding new employment, and being gainfully employed to the end of your working life?

Pay attention to the IT industry, it will be well worth your time – it’s one of the few growing market sectors in this country and overseas. Salaries are also more generous than most.

Remember: a actual training program or a qualification is not what you’re looking for; a job that you’re getting the training for is. Many trainers unfortunately completely prioritise the qualification itself. You could be training for only a year and end up doing the job for 20 years. Don’t make the mistake of opting for what may seem to be an ‘interesting’ course only to waste your life away with a job you hate!

Stay tuned-in to where you want to go, and formulate your training based on that – not the other way round. Keep your eyes on your goals and ensure that you’re training for a career that will keep you happy for many years. It’s worth seeking help from an experienced person that can best explain the industry you’re considering, and will be able to provide ‘A day in the life of’ synopsis for each job considered. All of these things are very important as you’ll need to know if you’re going down the right road.

Often, students don’t think to check on something that can make a profound difference to their results – how their training provider segments the courseware, and into how many bits. Most companies will sell you a program typically taking 1-3 years, and drop-ship the materials to you piecemeal as you get to the end of each exam. On the surface this seems reasonable – until you consider the following: With thought, many trainees understand that the trainer’s usual training route doesn’t suit. It’s often the case that it’s more expedient to use an alternative order of study. Could it cause problems if you don’t get everything done within their exact timetable?

The very best situation would see you getting all the training materials packed off to your home before you even start; the entire package! Then, nothing can hinder the reaching of your goals.

There is no way of over emphasising this: You have to get round-the-clock 24×7 support from professional instructors. We can tell you that you’ll strongly regret it if you don’t adhere to this. some companies only provide email support (slow), and so-called telephone support is normally just routed to a call-centre that will just take down the issue and email it over to their technical team – who will call back over the next day or so (assuming you’re there), at a suitable time to them. This is not a lot of use if you’re stuck and can’t continue and only have certain times available in which to do your studies.

The best training colleges opt for an internet-based 24 hours-a-day service involving many support centres throughout multiple time-zones. You get an interface that seamlessly accesses whichever office is appropriate irrespective of the time of day: Support when it’s needed. Never compromise when it comes to your support. Many would-be IT professionals that can’t get going properly, just need the right support system.

Students hopeful to build an IT career usually have no idea of what route is best, let alone which area to build their qualifications around. I mean, if you have no understanding of the IT sector, how can you expect to know what someone in a particular field does each day? Let alone arrive at which certification program is the most likely for your success. To attack this, we need to discuss a variety of definitive areas:

* Personality plays a significant role – what gives you a ‘kick’, and what are the activities that you really dislike.

* Is it your desire to reach a key goal – like becoming self-employed as quickly as possible?

* How highly do you rate salary – is it the most important thing, or do you place job satisfaction higher up on the scale of your priorities?

* Some students don’t fully understand the energy involved to attain their desired level.

* You will need to understand what differentiates all the training areas.

In these situations, your only option to investigate these areas tends to be through a good talk with an advisor or professional that understands computing (and specifically it’s commercial requirements.)

How long has it been since you considered the security of your job? Normally, this issue only becomes a talking point when something goes wrong. Unfortunately, the lesson often learned too late is that true job security simply doesn’t exist anymore, for the vast majority of people. We can however find security at market-level, by looking for high demand areas, together with a shortage of skilled staff.

Investigating the computing market, the 2006 e-Skills study demonstrated a 26 percent shortage in trained professionals. So, for each 4 job positions that exist around IT, organisations can only locate trained staff for three of the four. Highly taught and commercially accredited new staff are accordingly at a total premium, and it’s estimated to remain so for many years longer. We can’t imagine if a better time or market conditions will exist for acquiring training in this rapidly expanding and developing business.
