What kind of things do you expect the most superior Microsoft accredited suppliers to offer a client in this country currently? Undoubtedly, the finest Microsoft authorised training routes, providing a selection of courses to take you into different areas of the IT industry.

Try to discuss all the different permutations with a person who has knowledge of the commercial demands for IT staff, and is able to show you the most fruitful career to suit your abilities and character.

Having selected your career path, your next search is for a suitable training program customised to your needs. Your study program should leave no room for complaints.

Kick out the typical salesman that recommends a training program without a thorough investigation so as to understand your abilities as well as level of experience. Make sure they can draw from a generous array of training from which they could solve your training issues.

With a bit of real-world experience or some accreditation, your starting-point of learning is very different to someone completely new.

For those students starting IT studies and exams as a new venture, it can be helpful to ease in gradually, kicking off with a user-skills course first. Usually this is packaged with any study program.

A subtle way that colleges make more money is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and offering an exam guarantee. This sounds impressive, till you look at the facts:

You’ll be charged for it one way or another. You can be assured it’s not a freebie – it’s just been rolled into the price of the whole package.

People who enter their exams one by one, funding them one at a time are much more likely to pass. They’re thoughtful of the cost and take the necessary steps to ensure they are ready.

Isn’t it outrageous to have to pay a training company in advance for exams? Go for the best offer at the appropriate time, instead of paying any mark-up – and do it in a local testing centre – instead of miles away at the college’s beck and call.

Big margins are netted by some training companies that get money upfront for exam fees. A number of students don’t take them for various reasons but the company keeps the money. Astoundingly enough, providers exist that depend on students not taking their exams – as that’s very profitable for them.

Additionally, ‘Exam Guarantees’ often aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. Many training companies will not pay for re-takes until you’ve completely satisfied them that you’re ready this time.

On average, exams cost about 112 pounds in the last 12 months through Prometric or VUE centres around the United Kingdom. So why pay hundreds or thousands of pounds extra to get ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when common sense dictates that what’s really needed is study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams.

Only consider training paths that’ll move onto commercially acknowledged exams. There’s a plethora of trainers pushing minor ‘in-house’ certificates which are worthless when it comes to finding a job.

All the major IT organisations like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco each have widely recognised proficiency programmes. These heavyweights can make sure you stand out at interview.

Frequently, the average student doesn’t have a clue what way to go about starting in the IT industry, or even which sector to focus their retraining program on.

How likely is it for us to understand what is involved in a particular job when it’s an alien environment to us? Maybe we don’t know someone who works in that sector anyway.

To come through this, we need to discuss many definitive areas:

* Personality factors and interests – the sort of working tasks please or frustrate you.

* Why you want to consider moving into computing – maybe you want to overcome a particular goal like working for yourself for example.

* Is your income higher on your wish list than other factors.

* Considering the huge variation that IT encapsulates, it’s obvious you’ll need to be able to understand how they differ.

* Taking a cold, hard look at how much time and effort that you’re going to put into it.

For most people, considering these areas requires a good chat with a professional that has direct industry experience. Not only the accreditations – you also need to understand the commercial requirements besides.

Should you be looking for Microsoft certified training, it stands to reason you’ll want training organisations to offer a wide range of the best training programs available today.

It’s a good idea to have a chat about jobs with an advisor – and if you’re uncertain, then take counsel on what kind of IT job would be right for you, based on your personality and ability level.

When you’ve chosen your career path, you’ll need a relevant course matched to your ability level and skill set. The quality of training ought to be of an excellent standard.

It’s important to understand: the training course or the accreditation is not the ultimate goal; the job or career that you’re getting the training for is. Many trainers unfortunately completely prioritise the piece of paper.

It’s a sad fact, but thousands of new students commence training that sounds great in the sales literature, but which provides the end-result of a job that is of no interest at all. Just ask several college leavers for examples.

You’ll want to understand what expectations industry may have of you. What certifications they will want you to have and how you’ll go about getting some commercial experience. Spend some time setting guidelines as to how far you reckon you’re going to want to build your skill-set as it may present a very specific set of certifications.

Before you embark on a particular learning program, it’s good advice to chat over individual career requirements with an industry professional, to be absolutely sure the learning course covers all that is required.

OK, why should we consider qualifications from the commercial sector as opposed to the usual academic qualifications obtained from schools, colleges or universities?

With university education costs spiralling out of control, together with the IT sector’s general opinion that accreditation-based training is often far more commercially relevant, there’s been a big surge in Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA based training programmes that provide key skills to an employee for considerably less.

Of course, a certain amount of background detail must be learned, but precise specialisation in the particular job function gives a vendor trained person a huge edge.

It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. All an employer has to do is know where they have gaps, and then request applicants with the correct exam numbers. Then they’re assured that a potential employee can do exactly what’s required.

Does job security honestly exist anywhere now? In the UK for example, where business constantly changes its mind on a day-to-day basis, we’d question whether it does.

In times of increasing skills shortages mixed with escalating demand though, we often find a new kind of market-security; where, fuelled by conditions of continuous growth, businesses find it hard to locate enough staff.

The 2006 United Kingdom e-Skills analysis brought to light that twenty six percent of all IT positions available cannot be filled because of a chronic shortage of properly qualified workers. Essentially, we only have the national capacity to fill 3 out of 4 positions in the computer industry.

Attaining full commercial computing accreditation is thus a ‘Fast Track’ to realise a continuing as well as enjoyable line of work.

Surely, now really is such a perfect time to consider retraining into the computer industry.

Don’t listen to any salesman that pushes one particular program without a decent chat so as to understand your abilities plus your experience level. They should be able to select from a generous array of training from which they could provide you with what’s right for you.

Where you have a strong background, or maybe some live experience (maybe some existing accreditation?) then it could be that your starting point will be quite dissimilar from a student that is completely new to the industry.

Opening with a foundation module first may be the ideal way to start into your IT studies, depending on your current skill level.

Should you be interested in training in Cisco, a CCNA is in all probability what you’ll need. The Cisco training is intended for individuals who wish to understand and work with routers. Routers are what connect networks of computers to other computer networks via dedicated lines or the internet.

Routers are linked to networks, therefore it’s important to have prior knowledge of the operation of networks, or you will have difficulties with the course and not be able to follow the work. Seek out a program that includes basic networking skills (for example CompTIA) before you get going on CCNA.

You’ll need a specially designed course that takes you on a progressive path to make sure that you’ve mastered the necessary skills and abilities prior to getting going with Cisco.

One thing you must always insist on is proper direct-access 24×7 support via trained professional instructors and mentors. It’s an all too common story to find providers that will only offer a basic 9am till 6pm support period (maybe later on certain days) with very little availability over the weekend.

Find a good quality service with proper support available at any time of the day or night (irrespective of whether it’s the wee hours on Sunday morning!) You want access directly to professional tutors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages – so you’re parked in a queue of others waiting to be called back during office hours.

As long as you look hard, you will find the top providers that give students direct-access support at all times – including evenings, nights and weekends.

Don’t ever make the mistake of taking second best when it comes to your support. Most IT hopefuls who fall by the wayside, are in that situation because of support (or the lack of).

So many training providers are all about the certification, and completely miss the reasons for getting there – getting yourself a new job or career. Always begin with the final destination in mind – don’t make the vehicle more important than the destination.

It’s a sad fact, but a large percentage of students begin programs that seem amazing in the sales literature, but which gets us a career that doesn’t satisfy. Just ask several college graduates for a real eye-opener.

It’s a good idea to understand what expectations industry may have of you. What precise exams they’ll want you to gain and how you’ll build your experience level. It’s definitely worth spending time thinking about how far you’d like to get as often it can control your selection of accreditations.

Before setting out on a training course, you’d be well advised to chat over individual market requirements with an experienced advisor, to ensure the training course covers all the bases.

The old fashioned style of teaching, using textbooks and whiteboards, is an up-hill struggle for the majority of us. If all this is ringing some familiar bells, find training programs which feature interactive and multimedia modules.

Where possible, if we can study while utilising as many senses as possible, then the results are usually dramatically better.

Study programs now come in disc format, where everything is taught on your PC. Using video-streaming, you can watch instructors demonstrating how to perform the required skill, and then practice yourself – via the interactive virtual lab’s.

You’ll definitely want a study material demo’ from any training college. You should ask for slide-shows, instructor-led videos and interactive labs where you get to practice.

Some companies only have access to training that is purely available online; sometimes you can get away with this – but, imagine the problems if you lose your internet access or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. A safer solution is the provision of physical CD or DVD discs that removes the issue entirely.

Most of us would love to think that our careers are secure and our work prospects are protected, but the growing reality for the majority of jobs in the United Kingdom currently appears to be that there is no security anymore.

Where there are escalating skills shortfalls mixed with high demand areas of course, we can hit upon a fresh type of security in the marketplace; where, fuelled by the conditions of constant growth, companies find it hard to locate enough staff.

The 2006 UK e-Skills survey highlighted that twenty six percent of IT jobs are unfilled mainly due to a chronic shortage of properly qualified workers. Quite simply, we can’t properly place more than 3 out of each four job positions in the computing industry.

Well trained and commercially accredited new workers are consequently at a resounding premium, and it’s estimated to remain so for many years to come.

In actuality, acquiring professional IT skills during the next few years is likely the best career move you’ll ever make.

The CompTIA A+ training program covers four areas of training; you’re seen as an achiever in A+ when you’ve passed the test for half of them. Because of this, most colleges only have two of the courses on their syllabus. You’ll find that you’re advised to have the training for all four areas as many jobs will require the skills and knowledge of all four areas. It’s not essential to qualify in them all, however we’d advise that you study for all four areas.

Once you start your A+ training program you’ll become familiar with how to build and repair PC’s and operate in antistatic conditions. Diagnostic techniques and fault finding are also on the syllabus, as is remote access.

You might also choose to consider supplementing the A+ with Network + as you can then also take care of computer networks, and become a more senior IT professional.

Your training program should always include the current Microsoft (or Cisco, CompTIA etc.) authorised exam preparation and simulation materials.

Be sure that your practice exams are not only asking questions on the correct subjects, but ask them in the way that the actual final exam will pose them. This can really throw some trainees if the questions are phrased in unfamiliar formats.

For many reasons, it’s essential to know that you’re completely ready for the real exam prior to going for it. Going over simulated tests will help to boost your attitude and saves you time and money on thwarted exam entries.

Students will sometimes miss checking on a vitally important element – how their company segments the courseware elements, and into how many parts.

Individual deliveries for each training module one stage at a time, taking into account your exam passes is the typical way that your program will arrive. This sounds sensible, but you should consider these factors:

Students often discover that their providers typical path to completion doesn’t suit. You may find that it’s more expedient to use an alternative order of study. Perhaps you don’t make it at the pace they expect?

The ideal circumstances are to get all the training materials delivered to your address right at the beginning; the entire package! Then, nothing can hinder your progress.

Be careful that the certifications you’re considering doing will be commercially viable and are the most recent versions. The ‘in-house’ certifications provided by many companies are often meaningless.

All the major IT organisations such as Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco all have widely renowned proficiency courses. Major-league companies like these will ensure your employability.

Charging for exams upfront and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is common for many companies. But look at the facts:

Everyone knows they’re still being charged for it – it’s obviously been inserted into the full cost of the package supplied by the training provider. It’s certainly not free (although some people will believe anything the marketing companies think up these days!)

We all want to pass first time. Going for exams in order and paying as you go makes it far more likely you’ll pass first time – you prepare appropriately and are conscious of what you’ve spent.

Doesn’t it make more sense to hold on to your money and pay for the exam when you’re ready, instead of paying a premium to the training company, and to do it in a local testing office – rather than possibly hours away from your area?

Huge profits are secured by many training colleges that take the exam money up-front. A number of students don’t take them for various reasons but the company keeps the money. Surprising as it sounds, there are providers that actually rely on students not sitting all the exams – and that’s how they increase their profits.

Re-takes of any failed exams with training course providers who offer an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are monitored with tight restrictions. You will be required to do mock exams until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass.

The cost of exams was around the 112 pounds mark in the last 12 months when taken at local VUE or Pro-metric centres throughout the country. Therefore, why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra to get ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when any student knows that the responsible approach is consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software.

Today we live in a society very dominated by the media. We’re fed a diet of who’s cheated on who, bad luck stories, and why we should blame somebody else when anything goes wrong with our lives.

Not long ago, we used to look across the Atlantic at the American people, and wonder at the litigious way they lived their lives – now we’ve been bitten by the same bug! Anybody watching daytime TV can’t help but see the number of adverts purporting ‘no win no fee’ from voracious lawyers out to make a quick killing if they can blame someone else.

Everyone seems to know their ‘Rights’, but few seem to understand the responsibilities that underpin those rights. People complain about their circumstances, but wait for somebody else to solve their problems for them. They blame society, their boss, the government, the economy – in fact anybody rather than looking in the mirror and facing the truth.

But chances are the change will have to come from within if things are to improve. The same problems will keep coming our way until we learn to take responsibility and conduct ourselves differently – only then will the lesson be learned, and the problem disappear. Imagine how different our society would be if we all took responsibility for what we did. Fifty years ago, more people took pride in seeing a job through and not quitting on themselves and their families.

It’s not possible to change the world, but it is possible to change ourselves. Anybody who’s looking to study for self-improvement has already made the first move towards personal responsibility. Training successfully will demand self-accountability and conscientious habits.

Only you can take responsibility for putting time and energy into the task. Obviously, your training provider also has to be responsible for carrying out their promises of quality learning and support materials – that must equally be taken seriously. But you have to assume your own responsibility to be victorious and win through.

If approached in the right way, learning can be stimulating and fun. Critics and soothsayers are ten-a-penny if they think you’re going to get ahead of them, so it might take a little protecting yourself from outside negatives. Be responsible for your surroundings, and only spend time with those who are happy to see you move on.

In Britain today, we’re lucky to have the right to a quality of life not known in our grandparents’ day. But only when we have more regard for the responsibilities those rights carry, will we really reach the pinnacle of modern day success.

In-Centre IT workshops are generally sold by many training providers as a positive. But they’re a leftover relic in reality from the time when IT training courses came mainly from books and training manuals, and needed college back-up to be sure students understood everything. Modern training courses now incorporate state-of-the-art interactive instruction and testing, which leaves the books and in-centre brigade far behind.

As well as being part of an out-dated teaching system, there are many more hidden negatives with in-centre workshops. There can often be a lot of travelling required, as colleges can be miles away from students homes. This means spending hundreds of pounds on accommodation and petrol, as well as the often inflated course fees. An MCSE could well have 10 in-centre workshops, with at least one overnight stop each visit. Assuming you can’t get cheaper than 40 pounds for petrol, 35 pounds for accommodation and 15 pounds for food – that’s 90 pounds per trip, or close to a massive one thousand pounds for 10 trips!

It can often turn into a logistical nightmare trying to organise suitable dates – finding relevant workshops that are available and that fit in with your current job and family commitments (and happen to coincide with your study needs) can seem almost impossible at times. Workshops quickly fill up, so colleges end up either excluding people, or taking bigger numbers than is ideal.

Differing ability levels invariably make up the group workshops, creating awkwardness between those who want to go faster or slower. Many of us feel tense asking questions in front of other students, particularly when they’re not regular class-mates who we know well. We don’t want to appear stupid so questions get left un-asked! Compare that embarrassment with interactive video workshops and one-on-one live 24×7 support.

Workshops generally mean using holiday allowance from your job rather than un-paid leave. As 20 days a year is normal, if half of that or more is taken up with in-centre days, there’s not much left for family time and holidays. And that’s assuming your employer can facilitate those times, and give you the days off.

Training companies mostly provide weekday workshops, typically grouping two to three days together. This can be a big chunk of time away from the family and work – particularly if travelling has to be done the night before.

It’s also important for many students to keep their training private. Most don’t want to sacrifice potential advancement and pay-rises from their current job whilst they’re training, but how long can it be kept secret if there are five workshops to attend in a year? Employers might feel a little different towards someone who they know is training to get into a different industry.

Finally, many students regularly work away from home on their job. It’s challenging enough to fit time in for friends and family, but this makes workshop time nigh on impossible.

Watching and learning at your own convenience, from pre-filmed, one-to-one instructor lessons is so much more simple. When a question crops up, use your 24×7 live online support (which you should expect on technical career courses). You can watch again and re-learn modules as many times as you need to, until you’ve really grasped the lesson. There’s no hassle, and no need for note taking, so you’ll preserve time and money. By choosing interactive learning from the comfort of your PC you’re also more likely to preserve your sanity.

It started when I sat down with my wife Katie and we began to search for answers to our weight problems. We first identified what each of us hoped to gain and why being slimmer would give us that. We were surprised to realise that our goals were fairly simple. For Katie, it was all about the kids – being able to get in and play with them. She also wanted to lose the embarrassment she felt being in her bathing suit.

My main wish was to be able to purchase clothes that fit properly! We have a 3 storey townhouse, and I wanted to run up the stairs without panting by the top floor!

Going through this process revealed that how we perceive ourselves is a key factor in how we actually look. Sadly, as we grow bigger, our self-respect dwindles. Lots of us see a happier life ahead if we can just lose weight. I want you to know how much I understand this thought process. Here are some observations…

Medical research tells us that our sub conscious mind has no scope to differentiate between actual reality, and perceived reality. This means it ‘tells’ our conscious mind anything that pre-dominates. Repeat a concept often enough and that surfaces as the overriding idea.

Reflect on that for a little while – have you been sabotaging your hopes of a slimmer self by constantly telling yourself that you are fat? Our subconscious needs to be fed a diet of what we actually want to be real.

We should also make the rewards of being a lighter person our focal point – and not the effort it takes to get there. Firstly, we compiled a list of activities and such like that being too heavy made very difficult: They were things such as having fun, dancing, walks on the beach, more confidence, better sex, sports activities etc.

Next we conjured up visions of ourselves on vacation, looking fantastic in our new summer gear. Everyone approved of our good looks. Everything was fantastic!

Accordingly, both of us are a lot lighter and fitter – though not as thin as rakes! By the same token, we’re feeling terrific and life really has become fun!

As you’re looking to study a course to qualify for an MCSE, you’ll fall into one of two camps. You’re either just starting to enter the world of IT, and you’ve found the industry has a huge demand for men and women who are commercially qualified. Or you possibly are someone with a certain amount of knowledge looking to formalise your skill set with the MCSE qualification.

During your research, you’ll come across companies that lower their out-goings by failing to provide the latest version from Microsoft. Avoid these companies as you’ll experience challenges at exam time. If you’re learning from the wrong version, it is going to be hugely difficult to get qualified.

Training colleges should be completely focused on finding the right path for their students. Mentoring education is equally about helping people to work out which direction to go in, as much as giving them help to get there.

Of all the important things to consider, one of the most essential is always full 24×7 support from expert mentors and instructors. So many companies we come across only provide office hours (or extended office hours) support.

Look for training with proper support available at any time of the day or night (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) Ensure you get 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not a call-centre that will take messages so you’re constantly waiting for a call-back at a convenient time for them.

The very best training providers have many support offices active in different time-zones. By utilising an interactive interface to seamlessly link them all, no matter what time you login, help is at hand, with no hassle or contact issues.

Never make do with less than this. Direct-access round-the-clock support is the only way to go when it comes to IT training. Maybe burning the midnight-oil is not your thing; often though, we’re working at the time when most support is available.

It can be a nerve-racking task, but finding your first role in IT is often eased by training colleges, through a Job Placement Assistance facility. Sometimes, there is more emphasis than is necessary on this service, for it is actually not that hard for any motivated and trained individual to find work in the IT industry – because there’s a great need for skilled employees.

However, what is relevant is to have CV and Interview advice and support though; also we would encourage any student to bring their CV up to date as soon as they start a course – don’t put it off until you’ve graduated or passed any exams.

Getting your CV considered is more than not being regarded at all. Often junior jobs are got by students (sometimes when they’ve only just got going.)

The best services to help get you placed are normally local IT focused employment agencies. Because they make their money when they’ve found you a job, they have the necessary incentive to try that bit harder.

To bottom line it, as long as you put the same commitment into getting a position as into studying, you won’t have any problems. Some men and women curiously spend hundreds of hours on their training course and then just stop once they’ve passed their exams and would appear to think that businesses will just discover them.

The age-old way of teaching, involving piles of reference textbooks, is usually pretty hard going. If this sounds like you, check out study materials that are on-screen and interactive.

Many years of research has time and time again confirmed that connecting physically with our study, is far more likely to produce long-lasting memories.

Search for a course where you’ll receive a selection of CD and DVD based materials – you’ll be learning from instructor videos and demo’s, with the facility to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions.

Every company that you look at must be able to demonstrate some examples of their training materials. You should hope for instructor-led videos and many interactive sections.

Opt for CD and DVD ROM based physical training media whenever you can. You’re then protected from the variability of broadband quality and service.

Validated exam simulation and preparation packages are vital – and absolutely ought to be obtained from your training supplier.

Some students can find themselves confused by trying to prepare themselves with questions that aren’t recognised by official sources. Often, the question formats and phraseology is startlingly different and you should be prepared for this.

Mock exams are enormously valuable as a tool for logging knowledge into your brain – so when it comes to taking the real thing, you don’t get phased.

by Jason Kendall

Nice One! Finding this article means you’re likely to be contemplating your career, and if training for a new career’s in your mind then you’ve already got further than almost everybody else. Can you believe that hardly any of us consider ourselves satisfied and happy at work – but most will take no corrective action. Why not liberate yourself and take action – you have the rest of your life to enjoy it.

On the subject of training, it’s important to initially know what you want and don’t want from the career you’re looking to get into. Ensure that the grass actually is greener before you spend time and effort taking a new turn. Prudence suggests looking at the destination you’re hoping for, to make the right judgements:

* Would you like to work with others? If you say yes, are you a team player or are you more comfortable dealing with strangers? Maybe you’d rather be left alone to get on with things?

* Which criteria’s are fundamental when considering the market sector you’ll be employed in?

* Once you’ve qualified, are you hoping your new skills will give you the ability to serve you till you retire?

* Is it important for the course you’re re-training in to be in an area where you’re comfortable you’ll have a job up to the time you want to stop?

A predominant industry in this country to tick all of the above boxes is the computer industry, particularly IT. There’s a need for more skilled technicians in the industry, just search any jobs website and you’ll see for yourself. But don’t think it’s only geeky nerds looking at their computerscreens all the time – there are many more roles than that. Most of workers in IT are people of average intelligence, and they have very interesting and well paid jobs.

Far too many companies are all about the certification, and completely miss what it’s all actually about – which will always be getting the job or career you want. Always begin with the end goal – don’t get hung-up on the training vehicle.

Don’t be one of those unfortunate students who set off on a track that sounds really ‘interesting’ and ‘fun’ – only to end up with a qualification for something they’ll never enjoy.

Make sure you investigate what your attitude is towards career progression and earning potential, and how ambitious you are. It’s vital to know what (if any) sacrifices you’ll need to make for a particular role, what exams are needed and how to develop your experience.

It’s good advice for all students to chat with highly experienced advisors before they make a decision on a particular study programme. This helps to ensure it contains the relevant skills for the chosen career path.

It can be a nerve-racking task, but finding your first IT job can be made easier by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance service. The need for this feature can be bigged up out of proportion though – it’s quite easy for eager sales people to make it sound harder than it is. At the end of the day, the massive skills shortage in Britain is what will make you attractive to employers.

However, don’t wait till you’ve qualified before updating your CV. As soon as you start studying, enter details of your study programme and get promoting!

A good number of junior support roles have been offered to trainees who are still studying and have yet to take their exams. This will at the very least get you into the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s – rather than the ‘No’ pile.

Generally, a specialist independent regional employment service (who will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you) will perform better than any sector of a centralised training facility. Also of course they should know the area and local employers better.

Do be sure that you don’t put hundreds of hours of effort into your studies, just to give up and imagine someone else is miraculously going to find you a job. Get off your backside and get on with the job. Invest as much energy and enthusiasm into landing a good job as you did to get trained.

Looking around, we find a plethora of professional positions up for grabs in computing. Deciding which one could be right for yourself is a mammoth decision.

What is our likelihood of grasping the day-to-day realities of any IT job when we haven’t done that before? Maybe we don’t even know anybody who performs the role either.

Achieving any kind of right decision can only grow through a systematic investigation of several shifting key points:

* Your individual personality as well as your interests – what work-centred jobs you love or hate.

* Are you hoping to get qualified due to a specific raison d’etre – for example, do you aim to work at home (working for yourself?)?

* Is the money you make further up on your wish list than other requirements.

* There are many markets to choose from in the IT industry – there’s a need to gain a basic understanding of what sets them apart.

* Having a proper look at how much time and effort you can give.

The best way to avoid the industry jargon, and uncover the most viable option for your success, have an in-depth discussion with an experienced professional; a person who can impart the commercial reality as well as the certifications.

One thing you must always insist on is comprehensive 24×7 direct-access support through trained professional instructors and mentors. It’s an all too common story to find providers that only provide support to you inside of office hours (typically 9am-6pm) and sometimes a little earlier or later (but not weekends usually).

Try and find training with proper support available at all hours of the day and night (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) Ensure you get access directly to professional tutors, and not a call-centre that will take messages so you’re waiting for tutors to call you back when it’s convenient for them.

It’s possible to find professional companies which recommend and use online support at all times – including evenings, nights and weekends.

If you opt for less than support round-the-clock, you’ll regret it. You may avoid using the support in the middle of the night, but you may need weekends, early mornings or late evenings.

Effective weight loss is about two things – what we eat and how much we exercise. This isn’t always what people want to hear, as many would prefer to avoid doing exercises. However, the benefits out-weigh the negatives. When we exercise we burn up calories and we also build muscle.

Metabolically speaking, muscle is more active than fat. Therefore it’s a good idea to build muscle to use up our ‘fuel’. We use up more calories in direct proportion to the amount of muscle we have. Muscle development tones up and defines our overall shape.

Start by introducing exercises on a gradual basis. One of the best ways to fit more exercise into an already busy life is to incorporate it into things you already do. Avoid taking the lift or escalator – undertake to walk up at least three flights of stairs instead. Deliberately leave your motor some distance from your workplace, and do the last bit on foot. Whenever you take public transport buy a ticket for three quarters of the journey and then walk the rest.

Your goal should be to take some form of exercise five times a week. You can do short bursts of exercise, but 30 minutes or more is generally thought to be best. Doing a variety of exercises will relieve the boredom. That way you’re much more likely to stick with it.

It doesn’t have to be a chore to get fit. Join a club so you don’t feel so alone. Go for a walk whenever you get the chance. Doing that alone can bring huge benefits health-wise.

Your chances of having a stroke or heart problems will reduce if you become more active. Cancer of the colon is minimised too. We can lower our cholesterol and our chances of getting type two diabetes. We’re also likely to maintain a more stable mental attitude and find sleeping easier at night. All of which illustrates great reasons to get yourself going!

Pick out some comfortable items to wear when you go walking. Whether it’s cold or hot, always wear layers of clothing for outdoor exercise. You may need a new pair of walking boots. Do test them out as thoroughly as you can in the store. Do not buy shoes that your feet slop around in – only your toes need to be able to move.

Go through the following checklist when you’re about to get going: Stand up straight, weight evenly distributed. Relax your shoulders and draw in your tummy. Do be sure to warm yourself up well. Rolling your shoulders and stretching helps, as do a few squats and knee lifts. And last but not least, march on the spot for a couple of minutes and then off you go!

It’s important to develop a good walking style, so keep your back straight and let any tension go. When you arrive back home at the end of your walk, repeat your warm up in reverse, decreasing the size of your movements. Start with a few fairly short walks, and build up as you go. Brisk walking is generally good for all of us, but if you’re in doubt, consult your doctor first.
